A conversation with sweet little seven year old Eli, in 2nd Grade:
Me: Eli, do you like school?
Eli: Yes! I love it!
Me: Do you feel safe and happy at school? Or sometimes do you feel worried, or ever scared?
Eli: I feel safe and happy at school.
Me: Does your class have practice drills for an emergency like if there was a fire, or earthquake or something?
Eli: Yes. And we practice what to do if a bad guy gets in our school.
Me: And what do you do if a bad guy gets in your school?
Eli: Well, Mr. L will close and lock our door, and cover the window so the bad guy can't see in, and then we have to find a corner of the room to hide and get really small and not make one sound. If that happens, I am going to be behind everyone so the bad guy will get me last.
Talk about a pit in my stomach. The mere thought of my little Eli crouched in a ball, hiding behind his classmates~ well, I can't even go there.
The world is bad and it's getting worse. It seems by leaps and bounds. But I can still find comfort. I already know which side wins. I know which side will win. I can't imagine how scary this world would feel for me without that knowledge. Come what may here on this earth, I can be with my family for all of the eternities, as long as we stay on the winning side. I am grateful for the feelings of peace and comfort I have felt through prayer from my Heavenly Father during this devastating time.
